A warm welcome to all for our first lunchtime event of the new season. The Community Hub is above the library - the lift is now fixed. After the talk from Nick Johnson, of the Ancient Tree Forum, Libby Scot will tell us more about the Beltingham Yew and how you can join the local group involved in caring for this very special tree. September 28th marks the first anniversary of the felling of the, not quite so old, but better known, eponymous tree at Sycamore Gap. An exhibition dedicated to the tree will open at The Sill on the anniversary. Shona Branigan's five prints taken directly from the trunk are all on display at the Queens Hall, Hexham, until 19th October. This lunchtime talk takes place during Fair Trade Fortnight and so the lunch will include fair trade items from hotter climes as well as the local produce we generally champion. Any donations we receive on the day will be shared with the Fair Trade Foundation. And on the subject of local food and ethical purchasing of items that have to be imported, the not-for-profit company behind Hexham Farmers' Market has a short survey they'd like you to complete. They are exploring the interest in online ordering and local delivery of locally produced foods from a range of producers. This would be in addition to the fortnightly Farmers' market in Hexham. If you're in West Northumberland, could you please fill in this (very short!) survey: Click here | | | | | October Film Screening - Get Cumbria Buzzin' 7pm Tues Oct 15th, Comrades Club, Haltwhistle Bees are dying out. HFP will show several short films they made for Cumbria Wildlife Trust's Get Cumbria Buzzing project. It shows how the Trust worked with communities and Highways England to create a pollinators' corridor across Cumbria. HFP will also screen the short promotional animation they made for the Trust. Our pollinator patch on Avenue St Meen is likely to have been mown, for the first and only time this year, with the cuttings collected and removed, by the time you're reading this newsletter. In the coming weeks we'll scarify patches and broadcast the yellow rattle seeds we collected. Do let me know if you'd like to be involved. November - lunchtime talk On 13th November the lunchtime talk with Beanie Merson will focus on swifts. Matthew Greening from the Hexham Swift Haven project will also tell us about their work - in the meantime you can read about the Hexham project here: https://transitiontynedale.co.uk/gone-but-not-forgotten/ and view image of these amazing birds here: https://transitiontynedale.co.uk/swifts-on-the-wing/ 6+6 - suggestions welcome Any films you'd like us to screen or subjects you think we might explore in a lunchtime talk? Know any particularly engaging and informative speakers? Suggestions for next year's 6 + 6 program welcomed. | | | | | Creating new woodlands for the future
